Learning log

Monday 5th October briefed on editorial project.

I was optimistic of how I would find an editorial illustration project, as soon as I think editorial I think of newspaper caricatures something I’ve never been that inspired by, but as our first real project I decide to go into it with a clear mind.

Tuesday 6th October critical theory.

Wednesday 7th October independent study day re read editorial brief and read through articles.

Re reading the articles was a great help, I started to pick up on lines from the text that made my imagination go and I started to think of ways in which I could illustrate them. The one article that stood out the most to me was the iPhone debate there were a few lines which straight away conjured ideas that I wanted to draw.

Thursday 8th October visualisation workshop, rapid idea generation, helping to develop ideas

This was such a great help being put into groups and discussing our initial ideas and thoughts on our chosen debate, if I wasn’t sure that the iphone debate was the right choice this made it clear and after being on gap year even though still drawing it was so nice to be back in a class with other people that wanted to learn with similar minds telling you all their different ideas they had come up with, as well as bounce my own ideas off them to see what they thought. I felt this was a very beneficial activity which allowed me to keep my creativity flowing and not to get stuck in a rut of not know which thoughts to follow and which to dismiss, It made me eager to start developing my ideas.

Friday 9th October group tutorials about the editorial texts

Monday 12th October start developing ideas further in the studio, print making work shop

when first thinking about likening the iPhone to a person it straight away made me think of this advert for carphone warehouse, the artist Ljudbilden uses simple but really affective line drawn characters, a good use of line is something that I’ve always been into and tried to use in my own work so I decide to start to developing one idea

that I’d have of people sat on a bench with iphone acting as blocker so they could commutate in a simple line drawn way.

as I’d already done mono printing before and had decide that I was going to use a computer aided illustration for my editorial work I didn’t really give it much of a chance, but I did think it had a lot of possibilities and do hope to revisit it at a later date.

it started off as a quick sketch of the idea I’d had, but the final outcome is something that I’m really pleased with, the characterisation of the iphone mostly, but I also think that the idea of them stopping the people talking to one another can be easily seen, by adding the hand drawn text “killing conversation” a line I partially liked from the article it makes it very much link back to the article it self as well as being quite clear on what the article is about.

13th October critical theory

Wednesday 14th October independent study day carry on developing ideas and trying to get an idea of a final outcome

I was still full of ideas that needed to be put down on paper so I used my independent study day to start to draw and develop some more ideas I’d had from the mind map and discussions I’d been having.

This one relates to the idea again of the apple Iphone literally stopping conversation by acting as a gag, I was real happy with idea and started to think about developing it further and use that as a final outcome..

Thursday 15th October finalise your ideas, ask other which ideas are work best

these were my two finalised outcomes from the iPhone as a gag idea, I used the idea of hand drawn text from another idea to enhance the message I real think it works and I think it would interest the viewer enough to read the article, when inserting my image into the text I wasn’t sure about whether or not the composition of it worked I tried adding an extra character, but I think the it worked better without the second character.

The use of text with the illustration is something I want to look at in future project for sure.

There was one idea that I’d been playing around with, the idea of the iPhone become a spaceship and abducting the girl from the article’s boyfriend wouldn’t seem to leave me alone, after drawing up some sketches I drew it out scanned it and coloured I was really pleased with outcome again and then had the tough choice of picking between the two so asking class make I decided I’d go with the second Idea.

Friday 16th October DEADLINE for editorial brief, group discussion and evaluation of work. Reportage briefing.

Overview and evaluation of others work a great way to see how others illustrated the different articles and how some approached the same article that I choose.

I was over pleased with my final work I think of the two this one worked better it fit the space given so well and I just felt the over all composition was better, I think it’s an interesting enough illustration that there no need for using text and it is in fact stronger without it.

i felt the editorial mini project went well I found myself finding it easy to get back into the swing off things from the off . Out of everything I enjoyed being around creative people again all with different ideas and ways of working it was undoubtedly something I’ve missed being on a gap year working in a kitchen.

Reading the new brief I was excited from what I felt was a success from the last brief and having a place in mind that I wanted to use I couldn’t wait to get started.

Sunday 18th October collect drawing materials and charge camera for Mondays locational drawing and recording.

Having a place in mind I decide I’d go straight there on Monday so I collected pens, paper and charged my camera ready for the morning.

Monday 19th October locational drawing and recording of my chosen small world.

I turned up to the place I’d choose on the sea front about a mile right of the pier eager to start trying to convey the feelings I’d got from the pace when I had visited it before with friends, instead I was met with a different feeling maybe because of the time in the morning but I noticed there was nobody around the odd dog walker and the occasional cyclist went by as I sat on a bench but that was about it. As there was a lack of people I decide it would be a good time to have a real look around the place, I went up stairs that lead to beach huts all locked up for winter, a pair of old Speedos was all that showed someone had been there in mouths there were cobwebs in most of the windows. I started to take photos, which is when I noticed all the different textures I think because of the absence of people I had started to notice a lot of the smaller details of the place, which was pleasant surprise from a place that seem to be really uninspiring for me.

Tuesday 20th October critical theory

Thursday 22nd October develop initial themes from on-site work and think of way in which you want to present your outcomes

Put into small groups to discusses and show what we had recorded, this helped to get feedback on my very first ideas/problems I was having and learn what I needed to go when next returning to the location, as I’d mainly just taking photographs my group suggested I try and do more sketches .

I had recorded a lot of textures from my location and started to think of ways in which I could use them to show the feeling of the place, the idea of layering them up appealed to me because layering textures over drawing I’ve done is something I’ve done before and never fails to look good.

Friday 23rd October missed class to go back to location.

I thought hard about whether I’d be better looking for a place that inspired to create straight away, but with the slightly better weather and not want to give up that easily I decide to at least give it another shot.

I journeyed back to my location today, I planned to go late morning this time and with the sun out I thought there was bound to be more people enjoying what would maybe be the last of the sun for a long while, I was right, there were far more people walking up and down the sea front, but they all seemed to be wearing coats and scarves not that I’m blaming them, I think it was then I realised why I was finding it strange the lack of people and the winter wear is because the only time I have ever been to the seaside it in summer and I was missing the beach standards such as ice creams inflatables, bikini babes etc.. Then thinking back to the sub title ‘small worlds’ I thought of the change that the place I had chosen went through from summer to near winter.

Monday 26th October further development of ideas and think about an outcome.

I went back one last time with an idea starting to come forth in my mind as something I was going to pursue as a final out come I needed to shoot a couple more photos.

I manged to get what I needed and I started to remember how much I enjoyed photography and thinking of ways to link it into my work.

After looking at stuart kolakovics work it’s made me think how I’d frame my work and so I started drawing out frames for my photos.

Tuesday 27th October critical theory

Wednesday 28th October independent study day continuing with development of final realisations.

With an idea of what I wanted to do and how I wanted it to look I finished drawings and edited photos, before going to buy acetate.

My idea is to make a small picture book using the photos I’d collected showing the location in and dull and abandoned stake then to print on to acetate characters that I felt were missing that would be there through the summer months and layer them on top of the photos.

I’ve printed on acetate before and had quite a few problems so I knew it might not go so smoothly but thought the out come would be worth it!

Got everything printed after having to use the colour photocopier to print of to the acetate that was a bit hit and miss all I had to do was cut and clip the book together.

Friday 30th October DEADLINE for the reportage brief, evaluation and discussion. Narrative illustration briefing

Though a struggle to get everything to match up when cutting the acetate, I think it was worth it as I’m excited with the final outcome I think the fact I used acetate work in so many ways, that fact that the characters aren’t actually there can been seen by the transparency as if the are almost ghost like memories from summer this was an interesting concept as it was good memories that had made me choose this as a location in the first place.

Though I had problems with becoming uninspired by the place I had choose I really enjoyed this mini project I really liked trying to some up the feeling of a place. The fact I got to use my camera was awesome, for a while I’ve been slowly bringing my photography and illustration together and with this project I feel I managed to do it

Just how I wanted I think if I’d to do it again I’d try and add more characters to the scenes to make the beach more of a accurate representation of how it is in the summer, but I think with the time I had I did still managed to convey what I wanted.

Greek myths were something read to be as a child by my granddad as well as visiting many a museum and galleries that showcased much of it with him, I was intrigued to see if I could remember anything of them, I fully enjoyed reading them all through and was already starting to think of ways to illustrate them.

Sunday 1st November re read brief starting think creatively and text.

I read again the myths and decide that I wanted to illustrate “ the argo” there was something about a talking boat that appealed to me.

Monday 2nd November realising the potential of the text considerations of the narrative

Tuesday 3rd November critical theory

Wednesday 4th November independent study day, carry on with research and development of ideas

Started to research the myth and some of the characters involved and after look at the artist Sara Faneelli I straight away saw such a link between the argo’s eye ad sara’s eyes in her work.

Thursday 5th November collage and paper cutting workshop

This workshop gave me the idea of trying to incorporate collage in to my style of working I’d been really wanting to break the mould of how I’ve been working in some way and I thought this would be a great way.

after deciding I wanted to add collage into my work I looked at able parris work for inspiration.

Monday 9th November all day studio practice continuing to develop your narrative outcomes

Having chosen the three lines from the story that I found really the most interesting I started to draw up some idea of what I wanted the finals pieces to look like.

Tuesday 10th November critical theory

Wednesday 11th November independent study day finalise piratical work and ideas

Drew up final ideas scanned and coloured still think of how to link with artist research.

Thursday 12th November finalise everything.

Start printing, cutting, sticking and mounting everything.

Friday 13th November DEADLINE for narrative brief evaluate. DEADLINE for all work to be handed in.

Final couple of piece to mount
